Maple Ridge lots slope, sit on wet ground, and some back onto the Fraser River Escarpment or the floodplain. That changes how footings, walls and driveways are built, and which ones need an engineer.

Maple Ridge permit lines

What the City of Maple Ridge asks for, in plain words, with the City's own document linked. Rules change, so we confirm them for your job before giving you an estimate.

Decks

A deck more than 0.6 m (2 ft) above finished grade is a structure and needs a permit. A roofed deck, glass guards or a cantilever over 24 in. needs a sealed engineer's design.

Retaining walls

A permit is needed over 0.6 m; over 1.0 m a structural engineer must design the wall. The City's guide caps walls at 1.2 m and calls for drain tile behind every wall.

Sheds and accessory buildings

Up to 10 m² needs no permit. Over 10 m², a permit and a forms inspection; prefab structures over 10 m² need an engineer's anchorage letter.

Foundations

Footing and foundation forms are inspected before the pour, with a BC Land Surveyor's certificate of the forms on site. Lots beside slopes need a geotechnical engineer.

Driveways

New, widened or relocated driveway crossings and ditch infills need an application accepted by Engineering. One primary driveway per property; the City sizes any culvert and the applicant pays.

Patios and paving

Landscaping and paving aren't structures under the building bylaw, so a ground-level patio or sport court doesn't need a building permit.
